He was just thirteen when his father died. His mother, while fulfilling all the responsibilities of the household, also conducted a business under debt and raised her children well. She not only got inspiration from her mother but also developed a special attitude towards the talent and potential of women within her.
Until puberty, Kumaravel along with his brothers operated ancestral businesses, but after their marriage, they planned to do something of their own. It was the year 2000, he decided to start a business venture with his wife Veena Kumaravel. Under this business, he was also determined to empower other women financially.
After much research, he saw three areas where there were endless possibilities for business. A preschool, boutique or a salon, these three options were in front of him. After much deliberation, his wife asked him to opt for the salon business and then both launched their brand Natural with high-quality features at affordable rates. At that time, quality salon services were available only in five-star hotels, making it out of reach of the general public. Although she did not know much about beauty salons, she still laid the foundation of her success in this field through innovation.
For Natural Salons, it was not easy to expand to more than 680 branches across India. The first six years of business were spent in reducing losses. Kumaravel approached banks to expand their salon chain, but most of them turned it down, considering the salon business as unfair. However, he continued his efforts when a banker relied on him for repayment despite his lack of confidence in the salon industry. After six years of continuous work, a total of six branches of Natural Salon opened and became Chennai’s largest salon chain.
After nearly two decades of hard work on a business, the idea started due to his wife’s wishes, Kumarvel’s Natural Salon has achieved a tremendous position in terms of growth and industry transformation. The industry, once considered a taboo industry, has gained prominence not only because of the efforts of Kumaravel but also by leading Bollywood celebrities like her brand Genelia D’Souza and Kareena Kapoor. Kumaravel opened the door to endless opportunities for women in the profession of hairdressers and stylists, for which she deserves praise.
