Monica is a courageous and determined woman. Her confidence is very strong and on this strength she has hoisted the flag of her success in other communities. This story of her is not easy. They have faced such struggles that people cannot even think of in their dreams. Monica was forced to live as a refugee in her own country and was deprived of her basic rights for a long time. She has a relationship with India from the time her father came to India from China at the age of 14 in search of work.
Monica states that “Our grandparents’ financial situation was very weak and they became old and sick.” My father had heard that there are many employment opportunities in India and then she decided that she would try her luck in Kolkata.
In 1940, her father worked in a shoe shop and earned 50 rupees a month and saved all her money and sent it home. But when she was married to Wong Mei Yong of China in 1950 and Monica was born in 1953, her money was insufficient to run a house.
Everything was going on its way but at one time there was a storm which shook their foundations. Her father had a good argument with her boss. This brought havoc to her family who were already struggling to live their lives. Then she decided to go to Kalimpong and opened a restaurant there with her savings. Her father had a very small shop selling thupa and some Chinese curry. As her life was going on, then there was some tension on the India-China border and due to this she had to leave Kalimpong.
Such incidents one after the other were enough to shake her confidence, but still after some time her family made a bold start once again by gathering their courage once again. But destiny was allowed something else. After the Indo-China war in 1962, her life came at a worse time. One day very early soldiers came and asked them to tie their things and they were sent to Jaipur where 20,000 refugia were present before them in Doli in Tonk district.

Monika took a bold step in 1968 after spending six years in the camp. She wrote a letter to the Home Minister without fear and because of her letter, the government decided that they would release her from the camp. After leaving from there, she again came to Shillong. Her mother used to sell them outside the school.
In 1971, Monica was married to Liukuo Chao, who had a leather business in Kolkata. She started selling chemicals used for leather to help her family. After some time, inspired by her brother, she opened her salon with a loan of two lakh rupees. But giving up this job because of her young children. But by this time an entrepreneur had taken birth in her mind.
In 1991, she opened her own restaurant named Kim-ling, taking loans from her relatives and friends. Her entire staff consisted of her family. Soon Monica started earning Rs 1500 a day. Today Monica is known as ‘Dawn of Tangra’ and all this not only because of her restaurant but also her courage.

In 1993, she opened her second restaurant Mandarin with a loan of 2 million. In 1998, a restaurant called Tangra opened in Beijing for an investment of 5 million. After eight years, a restaurant called Tung Fong opened in Park Street. Her fifth restaurant was Mandarin with Lake View.
Today Monica employs 250 people and her restaurant has reached the pinnacle of success today. In 2003, she was given the Women Entrepreneur Award by the Kolkata Club. Her advice for a new entrepreneur is “if you know how to work hard and struggle you can achieve everything in life.”
