‘King of Spices’ no more, MDH owner Mahasham Dharampal Gulati dies at the age of 98
Story started from Pakistan!
This story begins in Sialkot, Pakistan. The spice brand of MDH started from this city of Pakistan and the one to start it was Monsieur Chunnilal Gulati. MDH means Mahashiyan di Hatti (Shop of Mahashyas). In 1919, Chunni Lal started a spice shop with the same name. In 1923, Chunnilal and Chananadevi had a son. Who was named Dharampal? Full name Mahasri Dharampal Gulati.
Dharam Pal was a great child, except for one education, he used to think about everything else. He would sit on the back of a buffalo on the river bank, shepherding him, wrestling in the arena as well as wrestling, helping him in his work with his father, but shying away from going to school. Chunnilal wanted his son to study a lot, become a big man but did not have symptoms of Dharam at all.
The father also understood this when Dharampal refused to read after the fifth. Chunnilal started teaching him as a carpenter, but Dharam did not mind here either. Then who knew that his luck would not be made from studying or learning as a carpenter, but from these masalas, whose shop his father had opened. After trying for some time to learn all kinds of work, in the end he started sharing his father’s business.
MDH Owner Mahashay Dharampal Gulati Motivational Success Story
Chunnilal’s work became better than before with his son. Now he came to be known as Chilli Wale. Everything was going well If there was not so much money, there was no trouble. But from what was going to happen now, Chunnilal’s family was going to go into trouble. Even before India became independent, things were flying everywhere but everyone was understanding that this was just a rumor.
Then suddenly this rumor became true. Immediately, millions of people were made homeless and forced to flee their birthplace. On 7 September 1947, Chunnilal along with his family somehow reached the Refugee Camp in Amritsar. Now everything had to start anew. The life of the Refugee Camp was like a terrible dream, which no one had even dared to see before. But a great advantage of being a dharmapala, a good-looking man and a great-looking man, is that such humans do not see trouble but find a way out of it. Dharampal did the same.
Tonga to spend money
Amritsar was a border area. In those days, the risk of riots was highest here. Dharampal did not want him to start any work and he would again go crazy. Apart from this, Delhi was cheaper than Punjab then. After thinking all this, 23-year-old Dharampal went to Delhi with his brother-in-law, but the problem was now what should be done. They did not have any special money. His father gave him 1500 rupees before coming to Delhi.
This was their capital. Out of this, Dharampal bought a Tanga for Rs 650. Leave the Metro to come in those days, even ordinary buses were not so much. Dharampal’s Tanga started running between Delhi Station, Qutub Road and Karol Bagh. For some time this business went on well, but soon Dharampal understood that he could not earn much more from this. After this, his mind started searching for some other business.
Tired of defeat, he came to know about the spice trade started by his father. Just here, he caught the road leading to success. Sold the tanga and got a wooden kiosk which he planted on Ajmal Khan Road in Karol Bagh. Dharampal named his spice shop “Mahashiya di Hatti of Sialkot, Degi chilli wale. Dharampal and his younger brother Satpal devoted their lives to pursue this new work.
Within a few years, both of their efforts started showing color. Now MDH was named after everyone’s tongue in the surrounding areas. Seeing the increasing work, Dharampal started setting up his shops in other areas of Delhi as well. It was time to move on from wooden kiosks and mango shops. Thinking about this, Dharampal made up his mind to open Modern Spice Store.
There was no such spice shop in Delhi yet. In 1953 Dharampal reached Bombay to see the design of such fancy stores. After returning from here, Dharampal opened the first Modern Spice store in Delhi. For a fifth pass person, thinking all this and applying it in his business proves that experience proves to be more effective than studies.
Success achieved due to purity
Apart from hard work and understanding, the special thing that brought Dharampal’s work to the highs was purity. Dharampal should be especially careful to ensure that there is no adulteration in his spices. It was the MDH spices that broke the illusion that only home-made spices are pure. There were other spice traders too, but Dharampal left everyone behind.
He also made a new beginning with its packing. Whereas before spices were packed in foil, MDH spices started being sold in cardboard packets. On this, the picture of Chunnilal and Dharampal started to appear and with this this slogan also started to be ‘Hygenic, full of color, and tasty. The raw material for spices prepared in MDH comes from Kerala, Afghanistan, Afghanistan and Iran.
Apart from this, machines have been installed to test their purity. MDH produces around 30 tonnes of spices every day. Who does not know about MDH today. It is the hard work of Monsieur Dharampal Gulati that today this spice brand is not only prevalent in the country but also abroad. MDH produces more than 60 spices including meat masala, degli chilli, kasuri methi and other such spices.
In 2017, the value of this company was estimated at 924 crores. This company exports its spices to more than 100 countries. Apart from this, it has more than 8 lakh retail dealers and more than 1000 wholesalers. After learning the work of a carpenter and running a tanga, the business started from just 1000 rupees, by his suggestion and hard work, Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, who has studied till the fifth, has brought success to great heights.
Dharampal, 97, is the owner and CEO of this company. Despite being so old, Dharampal does not consider himself old and regularly visits his factories. Even today Dharampal takes all the decisions of the company. Dharampal has been awarded the Padma Bhushan Award in the hands of the President for his hard work.
Are emotional and rich at heart
It is said that the person who cuts the troubles, can feel the grief of others very well. Dharampal Ji proves this to be true. The emotional they are, the bigger their heart is. What can you give someone to help them, not only some part of your earnings? But you will be surprised to know that Dharampal donates 90% of his salary to charity.
Apart from this, he has also formed an institution named after his father. This institution runs a 250-bed hospital where poor and helpless people get free treatment. Also, this institution has also opened four schools where needy children are given free education. In the Corona era, Dharampal did not back down from helping. More recently, 7500 PPE kits have been assisted by the Dharampal to the Delhi government.
This information was given by Manish Sisodia on Twitter. With this, he also helped by depositing funds in CM Relief Fund. Dharampal ji’s sentiment came in front of the country when Dharam Pal came to pay his last darshan on the death of former foreign minister Sushma Swaraj. During this time he sat near Sushma ji’s feet and started crying loudly in his honor. This scene made everyone emotional.
