Engineering or medical, some such profession has been considered as an indicator of success among the youth. However, with the changing times, youth pursued their passion and set new standards of success and also set an example for others. Our story today is dedicated to one such young personality, who added a new chapter of success.
Sonia Thiam of Manipur, a state in Northeast India, completed her college education in Delhi-NCR. She moved to Bangalore to do MBBS because her father wanted her to become a doctor. She successfully completed her doctoral degree and started working with a hospital in Bangalore. She was so attached to this city that she decided to make it her home. However, social conservatism was not favouring her North-East Indian form and she was often teased by people as ‘chinky’. Sonia showed determination and despite this, she persevered with her decision to settle in Bangalore.
“My father was always highly influenced by the profession of the doctor because the kind of work she does saves lives. For him, there is no other profession as honourable as a doctor. That is why I did MBBS from Bangalore. ”- Sonia said in a conversation with Business Khabar.
The more you are determined to face challenges, the stronger your strength to win the battle in life. She defeated the psychological obstacles created by being called ‘Chinky’, but she also had many other challenges. She soon realized that her profession of a ‘doctor’ was honourable and rewarding, but not in line with her passion. Sonia decided to become a fashion blogger while pursuing her passion. Stopping a successful medical practice, and convincing her family with all the challenges to become a fashion blogger, was also fraught with difficulties. She did take some time in the initial success, but it gave her the courage to talk to her family about new decisions. This success paved the way for her to progress.
Sonia started working on her blog ‘Sheer Vanity by Sonia‘. She was a newly appointed doctor and did not earn a high package. Nevertheless, she hired a professional photographer from the savings she received from her salary. Her quirky sense of style along with her physical features opened her way to success in the fashion blogging arena.
Unlike many other early-stage fashion bloggers, Sonia focused on creating a style-symbol of her own rather than imitating other successful bloggers. Her fans continued to grow in number over the course of the day and she started getting interesting offers from many well-known brands. Working with well-known brands such as Swarovski, Grazia, and Popxo, Sonia soon became a well-known face in the Indian fashion blogging industry.
“My brother always supported me as a strong supporter. I never knew that I would not be able to muster the courage to disclose this to my family. Sonia said.
Though Sonia Thiyam is not the only name to remember when talking about fashion blogging in India, she is one of the motivators who beat many obstacles to reach here. With her success, she hit a big slap on the face of those who once called her Chinki.
