Whether it is education or business or any other field, the daughters of our country have sung high flags of success everywhere. Today we have come up with the story of one such successful businesswoman who is not a doctor, but wanted to do something big in healthcare because of her doctor’s family. His revolutionary thinking transformed a small laboratory run by his father into a multinational company worth 3000 crores. To lay the foundation stone of the first Indian international pathology lab Amira Shah Its business success is unique in itself.
It was in the year 1980 that after graduating from Medical College, Sameera’s father Dr. Sushil Shah inspired the country’s existing health services to do something different. Then he turned to America, understood the various methods and processes there through studies and then returned back to ‘Dr. Sushil Shah Laboratory, laid the foundation stone of a pathology laboratory. Due to very little capital and lack of resources, he started working from his garage and used the kitchen as a clinic.
Dr. Shah was the first doctor of that era to introduce laboratory technology in the health world. Dr. Shah was always aware of his business as well as providing quality education to his daughter Amira. Ameera moved to the US for further studies and after completing her studies from Texas University started her career with multinational firm Goldman Sanch.
Amira returned to India in 2001 after working for a few years. However, information technology and technology etc. had a very small presence within the country at that time. Dr. Shah was undoubtedly doing something new but his mannerisms were old. The laboratory was running in a temporary manner in 1500 sq ft in South Mumbai. However, it was the only laboratory in that area and had established trust among the people.
Dr. Shah wanted to build a chain of his own laboratory across India, but he could not understand the idea of expanding it at the ground level. Amira pledged to fulfill this father’s dream and using the means of digital communication, ‘Dr. Sushil Shah Laboratory was renamed as Metropolis Health Care. Gradually expanding their laboratories across India formed a chain. Within a few years the company was successful in winning the trust of the people.
Today, the business of metropolis health care has spread to more than 25 countries. Not only this, the company is one of the largest pathology labs in the world, providing employment to more than 4 thousand employees. Amira, who transformed her father from a single lab to a Rs 3000 crore empire, is today counted among the most influential women entrepreneurs in the world.
