How did Bismillah Khan become Kamruddin Khan?
Kamaruddin Khan was born on 21 March 1916 in Buxar district of Bihar. Bismillah Khan’s real name was Kamaruddin. them Bismillah Khan name I met my grandfather. It is said that as soon as Kamaruddin’s grandfather raised him in his lap, it came out of his mouth ‘Bismillah’.
From that day onwards, everyone started calling Kamruddin Bismillah. Bismillah Khan belonged to a music family. His uncle, Ali Baksh, used to play shehnai in the Kashi Vishwanath temple. In his childhood, Bismillah used to follow his uncle to temples and saw him playing the clarinet.

It is said that that evening Bismillah Khan played such a clarinet that everyone was crazy about him. From that day onwards, everyone’s attitude towards shehnai changed. Bismillah Khan earned so much name from Calcutta that as soon as he returned, All India Radio, Lucknow hired him.
Celebration of independence by playing the clarinet
When Bismillah Khan hit his shehnai in All India Radio, the whole country became convinced of him. Where people were lost in their tune, on the other hand, the war of independence was going on in India. It was 1947. The British rule was defeated and India got independence.
India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru celebrated independence by hoisting the tricolor at the Red Fort in Delhi. At the same time, he also called Ustad Bismillah Khan in this celebration, so that he could hear the melody of independence for the whole of India.

Ustad Bismillah Khan always followed the Ganges-Jamuni tehzeeb. Though their religion was different, they had great respect for the river Ganges and temples. In a documentary made on himself, he is seen telling about his relationship with Benaras.
