Bobby Dalbec, Red Sox shortstop?
With the Red Sox so shorthanded and seemingly out of choices, it was Dalbec – a 3rd baseman turned first baseman who has some expertise – making his first profession big-league begin at shortstop Wednesday night time towards the Blue Jays.
Regular shortstop Xander Bogaerts was out with a again subject, and Christian Arroyo is banged up after making a tough slide in Tuesday’s loss. Kiké Hernandez can play shortstop, although, and whereas logic would possibly counsel he would fill in at quick with Dalbec taking part in second, that’s not the conclusion Red Sox supervisor Alex Cora finally made.
“(Dalbec has) played on that (left) side most of the time in the shift, so I know we always talk about him playing second in an emergency but you have to turn double plays, you have to do all that stuff,” Cora defined. “So I requested him if he’s comfy on that aspect and we’re going with him at quick.
“This is where we’re at. We’re thin. The fact that Bobby can play multiple positions, Kiké can do the same thing, this is the alignment we’re going with and we just have to go out there and compete.”
Dalbec’s skilled expertise at shortstop previous to Wednesday consisted of 4 main league innings there with the Red Sox final season and three innings with the Salem Red Sox in 2018.
Was there consideration for Hernandez – who’s performed 592 big-league innings at shortstop – to play there?
“The thing is more about Bobby playing second,” Cora stated. “We talked about it in an emergency but it’s a nine-inning game and double plays and all that stuff comes into play. It’s a lot easier for him throwing everything to his left and flipping everything to his left. Maybe the first groundball they hit, he makes an error and it’s on me. But the way I see it, this is the best alignment.”
Odds & ends
Cora stated Bogaerts, Arroyo and Tommy Pham are all day after day after struggling their respective accidents in Tuesday’s loss. Pham left the sport with a again subject after attempting to make a play in left subject and crashing into the wall. Arroyo stayed within the sport after sliding into first, however he was too banged as much as play Wednesday.
“Yeah, his knee, his back. That was a hard slide,” Cora stated. “He’s feeling it, so stay away from him and hopefully he feels better (Thursday).” …
Trevor Story was anticipated to take two at-bats as he started a rehab task in Portland on Wednesday. The second baseman has been on the injured record for six weeks since getting hit on his proper hand with a pitch, which triggered a small hairline fracture close to his wrist.
“We’re excited he’s going,” Cora stated. “I don’t know how slow the process will be. It’s up to him but the fact he’s out there, that’s good news for us.” …
The Red Sox’ beginning rotation this weekend towards the Rays will probably be Michael Wacha on Friday, Rich Hill on Saturday and Nick Pivetta on Sunday. … Josh Winckowski was optioned again to Triple-A to make room for Brayan Bello, who began Wednesday in his return from the IL.
