St. Mary’s (Lynn) had a banner run to the Division 3 women basketball title final yr, fueled largely by Niya Morgen, Kellyn Preira and Yirsy Queliz.
Wednesday morning, these three pupil/athletes signed their National Letters of Intent. Morgen will play at Bentley, Preira is headed to Monmouth, whereas Queliz will keep near dwelling at Northeastern.
“Today is one of the best days in the history of the school for girls basketball,” stated St. Mary’s (Lynn) athletic director/women basketball coach Jeff Newhall. “The three of them have had a great deal of success both on and off the court. They’ve been great student athletes here at the school.”
The trio was joined on the podium by ice hockey standout Jenna Chaplain. A Catholic Central League All-Star, the Danvers native signed her NLI to play at Assumption.
“Her goal has always been to play Division 1 college hockey,” Newhall stated. “She’s a great kid with a terrific work ethic. (Head coach) Frank Pagliuca has had a number of successful players in his time here and she’s certainly one of the best.”
It was a busy day at a number of native colleges which took benefit of the primary official day that pupil/athletes may signal letters of intent in particular sports activities. Notre Dame (Hingham) held a ceremony to honor a few of its premier athletes who signed their NLI. They included Grace Burgoyne (volleyball, US Naval Academy), Emma Kates (swimming, Assumption), Alexa Kenney (lacrosse, Boston College), Reilly Walsh (lacrosse, Boston University) and Lindsay Wilson (soccer, William & Mary).
“Having led their teams to countless victories, these young women have proven themselves to be fierce competitors,” stated Notre Dame athletic director Kristen McGill Kelly. “Throughout their time here, their dedication and leadership have helped us win numerous league and state championships. I am thrilled to see their accomplishments recognized on National Signing Day. I know they will make us all proud in the collegiate arena.”
Among the marque names who signed their NLI on Thursday was Worcester Academy’s T.J. Power, who will play his school basketball at Duke, whereas teammate Tre Norman will take his expertise to Marquette.
Northeastern has been one of many extra profitable baseball packages within the space lately and head coach Mike Glavine has a bevy of native expertise headed to Huntington Avenue. The native group consists of Jack Cropper (Norwood), Will Forsberg (Natick), Ryan Gerety (Franklin), Max Marchetti (Worcester Academy), Owen Roy (Worcester Academy) and Chris Walsh (Duxbury).
Boston University has three native subject hockey standouts heading its manner: Margaret Driscoll (Watertown), Grace Mullaney (Pingree) and Sophie Ortyl (Lexington). Driscoll’s teammate, Elizabeth Loftus, will play at Brown. Boston College’s nationally-ranked ladies’s lacrosse program obtained commitments from Molly Driscoll (Brooks) and Alexa Kenney (Notre Dame Hingham).
