In the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council meeting in Mumbai on Friday, it was decided to make efforts to start a six-team T20 tournament for women cricketers from 2023.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, ‘The AGM has approved it. We are looking forward to start the women’s IPL by next year. Let us tell you that BCCI has been under pressure to start women’s IPL for a long time. Cricket West Indies and Pakistan have already talked about organizing a women’s domestic T20 league. Since then the pressure on BCCI to start women’s IPL has increased.

IPL chairman Brijesh Patel said that the process of organizing women’s IPL has started. He said, ‘The process has started. This year four matches will be played between three teams, which will be at the time of IPL playoffs. These matches will be held in Pune. Last year these matches were not held due to Corona. The last time this tournament was played in UAE was during IPL 2020.
The BCCI is planning five or six teams in the initial phase. At the same time, 10 existing franchises of men’s IPL will be given the first chance to buy women’s IPL teams. Only then will BCCI invite outside parties.
