St. Johns: England decided to declare the innings on the final day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, but West Indies drew the first Test (ENG vs WI 1st Test) despite losing four wickets early. England declared the second innings at 349 for six before lunch after captain Joe Root’s (109 runs) 24th Test century on the final day and set West Indies a target of 286 to win in 70 overs on a flat pitch.
West Indies lost four wickets for 67 runs, but Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder lasted 36 overs to help them draw the match. West Indies scored 147 for four till the end. Bonner remained unbeaten on 38 and Holder 37. Spinner Jack Leach took three wickets in the second innings of West Indies. But in the meantime a lot of drama happened. In the 49th over, Leach’s ball hit Holder’s pad and he appealed, but England did not take a review.

England took their final review in the 53rd over when Leach felt that the ball had touched the edge of the holder’s bat and went into the hands of the wicketkeeper. But this review got spoiled. In the 58th over, Bonner was dismissed leg before by Craig Overton but Bonner decided to take a review. After which the decision of the umpire was changed and Bonner remained unbeaten. Due to this, Bonner and Holder held on till the end, both of them shared an unbeaten 80-run partnership.

Both shared a partnership of 79 runs in the first innings as well. West Indies scored 375 for four and scored 147 for four in reply to England’s declared second innings of 311 for first innings and 349 for six. England started the second innings at 217 for one in the morning. Jacques Crowley made 121 runs adding four runs to the night’s score, while Root made 109 runs after converting an innings of 84 runs into a century.
