HAVERHILL — When his staff was sitting at 0-6 halfway via the common season, all BC High golf coach Chris Hayes hoped for was an opportunity to simply make the postseason.
It’s secure to say the Eagles exceeded what their coach hoped for.
On Tuesday on the Renaissance Golf Club, the Eagles accomplished a seemingly inconceivable run from winless to capturing the Division 1 state title by 5 strokes over St. John’s (Shrewsbury), Xaverian and Wellesley because the Catholic Conference took three of the highest 5 spots. The Pioneers took house the second place trophy in a tiebreaker.
“It takes a lot to make me speechless if you ask these kids and I kind of feel that right now,” Hayes mentioned. “Even when we were 0-6, the potential was always there. But I certainly wouldn’t have believed this might happen even then.”
The Eagles consistency from high to backside of their lineup proved to be the distinction maker as that they had three golfers crack 80 on the difficult Renaissance format. Andrew teDuits and Danny Fearing led the way in which with stellar rounds of 2-over par 74, whereas Nick McCabe added a 76 to account for 3 of the 4 scores the Eagles used as a staff.
“Nick and Andrew both made the match play part of the Junior Amateur this summer, so the talent is there,” Hayes mentioned. “But high school golf is just hard. It’s only nine hole matches and if you have one bad hole, your day is over. Teams like us are built for tournaments like this.”
Like a lot of the groups, the Eagles performed a apply spherical over the weekend to familiarize themselves with the Brian Silva-designed course and Hayes acknowledged that it helped play a giant function in his staff’s win on Tuesday.
“The practice round really helped. It let us know where to miss and not miss some shots,” Hayes mentioned. “We knew if the guys could keep the ball in front of them, we’d have a good chance.”
In the person competitors, a pair of Division 1 dedicated standouts stole the present.
Longmeadow junior Ryan Downes made 5 birdies and an eagle on a golf course that performed for much longer than its 6,472 yards due to heavy rains on Monday and an on-and-off drizzle via the spherical on Tuesday.
Downes’ spherical of 3-under 69 was the one underneath par rating on the day, ok to provide the Vanderbilt-bound star a three-shot victory over University of Central Florida commit Molly Smith of Westford Academy.
“It was definitely a little tough out there at the beginning because of the fog,” Downes mentioned. “It was really hard to get your yardages.”
Behind Downes and Smith got here a handful of golfers as Andover’s Noah Farland, teDuits, Fearing, St. John’s Prep’s Terry Manning, and Xaverian’s Thomas Constantine all completed in a tie for third at 2-over par 74.
Barnstable’s Chad Tordone, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Matt Quinn and Wellesley’s Cole Adams all shared eighth with rounds of 75.
