US Special Envoy on Climate Change John Kerry arrived in Bangladesh on Friday. US President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold an online summit on climate change this month. Prior to this summit, Kerry has come to Bangladesh to learn what steps he has taken to deal with climate change.
According to the State Department, Kerry has visited the United Arab Emirates earlier, where the administration has said that hot weather, less rain, drought, more storms are affecting infrastructure, human health. He also traveled to India, where he discussed these challenges with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Increasing sea level threatens Bangladesh
Some experts have warned that rising sea levels could engulf Bangladesh’s vast coastal region and cyclones and tides could harm agriculture which is the livelihood of millions of people. This threatens the world’s largest mangrove forest ‘Sundarbans’ and tigers living in it.
The State Department said that during their discussions, Kerry and Modi focused on clean energy, cooperation on innovation and raising funds for new emerging technologies such as energy storage, green hydrogen, clean industrial processes and agriculture. Biden has invited 40 world leaders including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the summit to be held on April 22-23.
No invitation was sent to Pakistan
Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said that we would be happy to state our priority issues. We will also share the steps taken by Bangladesh so far. US President Joe Biden has invited 40 world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for a ‘Leaders’ Summit’ to be held for the purpose of talks on tackling climate change, but Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s name in this list Is not.
Pakistan’s boycott from the summit has caused panic among many analysts. Many raised the question that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is paying special attention to the environment and global warming. The US State Department last week indicated that Pakistan has not been called for the White House summit.
