A 22-year-old Muslim youth was found dead inside a police station in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh (UP) on Tuesday. Altaf, a laborer, was brought to the Kotwali police station for questioning in connection with the abduction of a minor Hindu girl. According to the Indian Express, the body of Altaf, a resident of Nagla Syed in the district, was found hanging inside the toilet of the police station. Police has started a detailed investigation into the matter. Kasganj Superintendent of Police Botre Rohan Pramod has suspended five policemen including SHO Virendra Singh. The other four policemen to be suspended are two sub-inspectors and two constables.
Altaf’s family blamed the police for his death and protested outside the hospital where the postmortem was being conducted yesterday. The matter was resolved after senior police officials assured strict action against the policemen found guilty. Heavy police force has been deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Acting SHO of Kotwali police station Ramesh Prasad said that the post-mortem report has said that death was due to hanging. He said that the minor girl is yet to be traced.
According to the police, the girl from a Hindu family, where Altaf worked as a laborer, had gone missing. His father lodged an FIR against Altaf under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping, abducting or forcing a woman to marry him) of the IPC.

The SP said that Altaf was called for questioning at the police station on Tuesday morning. During interrogation, he requested the police to go to the toilet. He was sent to the toilet located inside the lock-up of the police station.
When Altaf did not return for a long time, the police went inside and found that he had tried to hang himself with his jacket. Altaf was found unconscious. Policemen took him to the Community Health Center, where he died during treatment.
Ramesh Prasad said, “Investigation into Altaf’s death is on. As of now, no FIR has been registered in the matter.” Altaf’s father Chand Miya told that a police team had come to his house on Monday evening and asked to send his son for questioning in a case.
“The police told me that they suspected my son’s role in this case and wanted to interrogate him. I handed over my son to the police who came to my house,” he said.
The father further said, “When I went to the police post, the police sent me back. After 24 hours, the police is now saying that my son had hanged himself. I would say, the police had hanged my son.”
