The United Nations on Thursday suspended Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Russian troops are accused of “gross and systematic human rights violations” by attacking Ukraine.
Russia was kicked out by a vote of 93-24
On Thursday, the United Nations voted on a proposal to remove Russia from the Human Rights Council. 93 countries led by the US voted in support of this resolution. At the same time, 24 countries did not ie in the vote of support for Russia. While 58 countries did not participate in the vote. India excluded itself from the voting process. Removal of Russia from the Human Rights Council requires a vote of two-thirds of the voting members.
What did India say in the United Nations?
In the United Nations, India said, ‘From the draft of the Declaration of Human Rights, India has been at the fore in protecting human rights. We believe that all decisions should be taken respecting due process and within a democratic framework. This also applies to international organizations especially the UN.

UN passed the resolution
The 193-member United Nations General Assembly also passed a resolution during this period. In the resolution, the General Assembly said it expressed “serious concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine”. The General Assembly said that there have been many reports of human rights abuses by Russia, which are a matter of serious concern.
Libya was last suspended in 2011
Very few times in the history of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a country has been suspended. The last time Libya was suspended from this council was in 2011, when soldiers loyal to the then ruler Muammar Gaddafi began violence against protesters.
Russia gave this warning before voting
The news agency Reuters reported in a report that before the vote, Russia had warned all countries that if they supported the resolution or did not participate in the vote, it would be seen as ‘unfriendly behaviour’.
