The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in Goa by winning 20 out of 40 assembly seats. The BJP has the support of two and three independent MLAs of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). However, the BJP is yet to stake claim to form the next government.
BJP leaders including Sawant and party’s Goa unit president Sadanand Shet Tanawade held a meeting at the party office in Panaji on Sunday. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tanawade said the date for the swearing-in of the new government would be announced after the arrival of party observers and the BJP Legislature Party meeting in Goa.
“The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is likely to be held between March 23 and 25,” Tanawade said. Also, he said that Prime Minister Modi will also attend the event. He said that Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister at a function to be held at Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Stadium in Bambolim.
Replying to a question, Tanawade said the new chief minister would be announced by the central leadership after holding a meeting with the party legislators. He said the formation of a new government in Goa has been put on hold as it has to be done along with other states where the BJP has retained its power. Sawant and his party colleague Vishwajit Rane met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday evening, where party president J P Nadda and general secretary B L Santosh were also present.
