Nagpur. At present, citing the very meager pension being given to the destitute and old age and it is not possible to survive in such a small fund in the era of inflation, at least Rs. Herambh Kulkarni filed a public interest litigation in the High Court requesting to order pension every month. After hearing the petition, Justice Sunil Shukre and Justice Anil Pansare adjourned the hearing till January 5, granting freedom to amend the petition and produce some documents.
On behalf of the petitioner Aseem Sarode and Chief Public Prosecutor Ketki Joshi argued on behalf of the government. The petitioner told in the petition that at present Rs 1,000 per month is given to the destitute and old people by the state government. financial assistance is given. According to this only Rs 33. Daily alimony is being paid. Inflation rate in the year 2020 was 6.2, while it is likely to increase. In such a situation, the pension should also increase.
The central government should make a provision of 15 percent increase in the budget
The petitioner said in the petition that the Government of India had issued the Old Age Pension Scheme for the purpose of providing security to the senior citizens of the country. The National Council for Older Persons was constituted by the Central Social Justice Department on 11 January 1999, which also included members of the National Human Rights Commission. The first meeting of this council was held on 13 June 2000 under the chairmanship of the Union Minister of State for Social Justice. The co-secretary of the commission also participated in the meeting. The petitioner requested the Central Government to make a provision for an additional 15 percent increase in the budget for the purpose of providing financial assistance to the elderly people, increasing the share of the Center.
Parliamentary Standing Committee also recommended
The petitioner said that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development presented a report in the Lok Sabha on March 9, 2021, in which the Central Government has been recommended to increase the meager pension being given to the elderly. Even displeasure has been expressed for not doing anything on the suggestions given to increase the fund for the last two years. The petitioner was of the view that the stand of public interest has been adopted as per the Constitution. It is the responsibility of the government to provide services and facilities of good living to the people of the country, so that a request was made in the petition to order the central and state government to implement the scheme. After the hearing, the court issued the said order.
