New data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, shows that a total of 1,53,052 suicides were registered in the country during 2020, a 10% increase over 2019. Also, the suicide rate increased by 8.7% during 2020 as compared to 2019.
The report said that those working on daily wages, self-employed individuals in terms of suicides for men and housewives in cases of suicides for women, were the highest figures.

“Out of a total of 1,085,32 male suicides, the highest number of suicides were committed by daily wagers (33,164), followed by self-employed persons (15,990) and unemployed persons (12,893),” the report said. “
After this, a total of 44,498 women committed suicide in the country during 2020. The highest number of suicides among women (22,372) were housewives, followed by students (5,559) and daily wagers (4,493).
The report reveals that a total of 22 transgender persons also took their lives. Of these, five were unemployed, nine were daily wage earners, two self-employed and two housewives, while 4 fall under the second category.
Among the megacities, the national capital saw the highest number of suicides, a jump of over 24% in 2020 compared to 2019, followed by Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

The report said that a total of 10,677 persons (including 5,579 farmers and 5,098 agricultural laborers) involved in the agriculture sector took their lives in 2020, which is 7.0 per cent of the total suicide deaths (1,53,052) in the country. . Of the 5,579 farmer suicides, a total of 5,335 were male and 244 were female.
States and Union Territories, i.e. West Bengal, Bihar, Nagaland, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Delhi, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry did not report any suicides of farmers as well as agricultural labourers.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, “family problems” and “illness” were the leading causes of suicide, with 33.6% of total suicide cases during 2020 due to family problems and 18.0% due to illness. “Drug abuse/addiction” (6.0%), “marriage issues” (5.0%), “love affairs” (4.4%), “bankruptcy or debt” (3.4%) were the other major causes of suicide.
