Stan Swamy Dead: Pastor Stan Swamy, arrested in the Elgar Parishad case, died on Monday at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai. Swamy, 84, was arrested in October 2020 under the stringent anti-terrorism law UAPA. Stan Swamy also got corona during his stay in Mumbai jail. The information about his death was given in the Bombay High Court on Monday when his interim bail application was to be heard.
Before the hearing on the bail application began on Monday, it was informed by Stan Swamy’s lawyer and Holy Family Hospital that Stan Swamy has passed away. The lawyer told that Stan Swamy’s health had worsened since Sunday night itself. He suffered a heart attack at around 4.30 am, after which he could not be saved. Stan Swamy also had a serious disease like Parkinson’s. His lawyer has alleged that the negligence of Taloja Jail authorities was responsible for the death of Stan Swamy, whose stand did not allow him to get proper treatment in the early stages of the disease.
The Holy Family was admitted to the hospital on the orders of the High Court.
After Stan Swamy’s health continued to deteriorate, he was admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai on 29 May only on the orders of the High Court. Earlier in May, during a hearing held through video conferencing, he had told the vacation bench of the High Court that his health was deteriorating continuously during his stay in Taloja jail. Stan Swamy had demanded interim bail and better treatment facilities on medical grounds, saying that if the situation continues as it is, then he will die soon.
NIA said there is no concrete evidence of Stan Swamy’s illness
However, the NIA, in an affidavit filed in the High Court last month, opposed Stan Swamy’s bail application, saying there was no concrete evidence of his illness. The agency had alleged that 84-year-old Stan Swamy is a Maoist who has hatched a conspiracy to create unrest in the country. Stan Swamy, an elderly pastor and activist working for tribals in Jharkhand, was arrested by the NIA in October 2020 as an accused in the Elgar Parishad case.

He died because of showing gross insensitivity and not getting medical facilities on time, for which the central government is accountable.” Father Stan Swamy had spent most of his life working for the tribals in Jharkhand itself.
Shocked to learn about the demise of Father Stan Swamy. He dedicated his life working for tribal rights. I had strongly opposed his arrest & incarceration. The Union Govt should be answerable for absolute apathy & non provision of timely medical services, leading to his death.
