Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: In the midst of the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s efforts to form an interim government of all parties are still fruitless. According to a PTI report, government sources said that there will be further delay in the appointment of the remaining 26 members of the cabinet.
On the other hand, the doctor warned in view of the crisis that the death toll due to economic crisis could be more than those who lost their lives in the COVID epidemic.
Sri Lanka’s Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said it was ready to support the opposition’s no-confidence motion against President Rajapaksa. The SJB and TNA have 64 members in the 225-member assembly. The Rajapaksa government, with the support of 150 members along with allies, has lost the support of 42 members. The session of Parliament is to begin from April 19.
19 refugees reach Tamil Nadu coast
Meanwhile, a group of 19 Sri Lankan refugees reached the Tamil Nadu coast on Sunday. All of them are women and children, official sources said. These refugees from the northern regions of Sri Lanka have reached the coast of Rameswaram in two separate boats. Since March 22, 39 Sri Lankan Tamils have reached India.
More deaths may occur due to economic crisis
The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) said that all hospitals are no longer getting imported medical tools and vital medicines. General surgeries have been banned in many hospitals since last month because of the shortage of anesthetics. The SLMA also said that it is not possible to start emergency treatment too early.
The association said that it is very difficult to choose the option in front of us. SLMA said, “We have to decide who needs treatment and who will not. If supplies are not restored within a few days, the death toll will exceed that of COVID.
India sent petrol and diesel
Due to the economic crisis, there is a massive protest on the streets. At present, there is a huge shortage of fuel in Sri Lanka, which India is playing a big role to reduce. India has transported 36,000 tonnes of petrol and 40 thousand tonnes of diesel to Sri Lanka as a credit line to Sri Lanka.
