Russia-Ukraine War: India did not participate in the voting on the motion of condemnation in the United Nations General Assembly against Russia’s attack on Ukraine. India has done this for the third time in a week at the global body’s resolutions on rising tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.
The 193-member General Assembly voted to reaffirm Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity along its internationally recognized borders, and to “strongly condemn” Russia’s aggressive stance against Ukraine. .
35 countries including India did not vote
A total of 141 members voted in favor of the motion while five opposed it. India was among 35 countries that abstained from voting. When the resolution was passed, there was applause in the General Assembly. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti, through his official Twitter handle, has given his stand on India’s absence in this voting process. A two-thirds majority is required in the General Assembly to pass a resolution.

Requested for a peaceful solution
The resolution criticized Russia’s decision to order its nuclear forces to be ready, and also condemned Belarus’ involvement in the “illegal use” of its military against Ukraine. They were called upon to stick to their international obligations.
The resolution called for an immediate peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation and other peaceful means.
Russia vetoed the UN Security Council
About 100 member countries, including the US, Britain, Germany, Afghanistan, Canada, France, Ireland, Kuwait, co-sponsored the proposal named ‘aggression against Ukraine’. The resolution of the UNGA was similar to the resolution brought in the Security Council of 15 countries last Friday. India did not participate in that either. The resolution of the United Nations Security Council voted 11 in favor and three abstained, while it was blocked after permanent member Russia exercised its veto.

Since 1950, 11 such emergency special sessions of the General Assembly have been called. This special session was also called after almost 40 years. Wednesday’s resolution demanded that Russia immediately stop using force against Ukraine and refrain from any unlawful threats or use of force against any UN member state.
