Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray reviewed the situation in the wake of increasing complaints from local citizens regarding air and water pollution in the Korodi and Khaparkhed thermal power generation project premises. During this, instructions were given to the departments of the state government to prepare a measure plan for pollution control.
Environment Minister directed to give the list of decisive measures plan to Maharashtra Vidyut Niruti Company, Pollution Control Corporation along with Center for Sustainable Development, Manthan Study Center, Pune to reduce the pollution in the premises due to Koradi and Khaparkheda Thermal Power Plant. . This decision was taken in the meeting held through online system. After seeing the presentation regarding the measure plan, instructions were given to plan concrete measures regarding pollution control in the power generation project premises. In this regard, a meeting will be held with Energy Minister Nitin Raut, Mahanirdhi and Control Corporation to prepare the proposed work draft. Manthan and CFSD organization were invited to know the status of pollution of fly ash in the water source in the campus.
Fly ash increased problems in Nandgaon
Manthan, CFSD and ASR Sanstha published a report on 18 November regarding pollution in Koradi and Khaparkheda. The report states the need to stop the polluting components at the earliest. Along with this, suggestions were also given to remove the ill-effects of pollution so far under the supervision of independent experts including local group and civic body members. In Nandgaon of the district, fly ash is being dumped by the local citizens without taking the no-objection certificate. On this occasion, the researchers demanded not to build a new unit in the Koradi project and not to start a new fly ash pond at Nandgaon.
Toxic metals in water sources
Shripad Dharmadhikari, coordinator of Manthan Study Center, placed the findings of the study in the meeting. He said that due to water pollution, heavy toxic dung is being found on a large scale. CFSD Director Leena Buddhe highlighted the pathetic condition of Nandgaon. All parameters are being trampled in the new ash pond spread over 750 acres. This has got to stop. Crops are getting damaged due to ash pond. Kanhan and Kolar rivers have also become polluted. Pench river flowing at 50 meters has also become polluted due to ash pond. Aditya directed the Mahanimruti officials to directly visit the site of the incident to take stock of the situation, check the fly ash water and health consequences. It has been recommended to develop a measure plan for 100% utilization of fly ash in the entire state.
