To improve the country’s economic condition, the government is increasing the number of trains. At the same time, the number of passengers at stations has started increasing due to the running of trains in the fifth phase of unlock. Porters present at this station are benefiting. Actually, the railway service was stopped in the lockdown to prevent the rising infection of Corona. This had a significant impact on the lives of porters present at the stations. However, now the situation is getting better than before. There are 1,237 coolies working at New Delhi railway station, out of which around 1000 kulis are currently working at the railway station. The coolies had gone back to their respective homes due to the lockdown, but now the coolies have come back to work at the station as well as their income has started to make a difference.
Thousands of corona infected are coming out daily in Delhi, but the good thing is that none of these working people who carry the burden of the world is corona infected. At the same time, where the initial round used to earn around 200 rupees daily, now coolies are earning up to 500 rupees every day.
New Delhi railway station has 102 trains daily. Due to which the number of travellers has also started increasing. Coolie Chandra Meena, working at New Delhi railway station, told IANS, the situation has been fixed now. Now I earn up to 400 rupees a day, although this is not possible every day, now life is being done as compared to before.
He said, increasing the number of trains and the arrival of passengers is making a difference. We would like people to start coming so that we can continue to live.
Quli Hussain Khan told IANS, I have been working as a porter since 2007, now I earn up to 500 rupees but I am not able to earn even one rupee on any given day. The condition had worsened during the lockdown. It had become very difficult to live every day.
Coolie Dilip Khan tells IANS that, I stayed home for 4 months in lockdown, did not earn a rupee, but now gets 300-400 rupees daily. People are moving from one place to another, due to which we are benefiting.
Some porters also believe that, due to fear, people do not like to leave, while the VIP ride comes out and our condition is fine. Right now the general public is leaving, some need us and some do not.
Actually, the porters also believe that due to the convenience of elevators and escalators at the railway station, the income of the porters has also been affected. Because the passengers themselves carry the luggage.
The porters cut a slip of Rs 120 in a year. After which they are given a travelling pass by the railways. So that once a year, the porter and his family can travel anywhere for free. The validity of which is 5 months and 3 uniforms are also given. There are 20,000 to 23,000 coolies all over the country, out of which there are 2000 to 3000 coolies in Delhi.
