Electric Vehicles: There is good news for the people of Delhi. Now vehicle owners in Delhi will get the option to convert old diesel and petrol vehicles into electrical vehicles. The Transport Department of the Delhi Government has started the process of registration of centers for retrofitting of old diesel and petrol vehicles with an aim to convert them into e-vehicles with electric kits.
Panel of 10 Electric Kits Manufacturers
In a Livemint report, officials said that 10 electric kits manufacturers have been empaneled to convert petrol and diesel vehicles into electric vehicles. The guideline for those who install electric kits says that they will be authorized by the kit manufacturer or supplier to install the kit on their behalf.
Technicians will have to be given training
As per the guideline, the installer should have technicians. Also the supplier should give adequate training to the technicians. Also, records should be maintained of such vehicles in which electric kit has been installed and its details should be made available to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, if required.

Fitness test will have to be done once in a year
The installer shall be required to conduct a fitness test of the vehicle at least once in a year and shall keep a record of the parameters tested. The installer should fitness the vehicle for kit installation, inform the owner of the vehicle and obtain his written consent.
The panel of retrofitters appointed by the Department of Transport will be approved by the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT), a leading testing certification, research and development agency.

How many old vehicles are there in Delhi
According to officials, there are around 1.5 lakh diesel vehicles that are more than 10 years old in the city. At the same time, the number of petrol vehicles older than 15 years is more than 28 lakh.
In compliance with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines, the Delhi government will deregister all diesel vehicles older than 10 years with effect from January 1, 2022 and issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) for re-registration of such vehicles in other states. Will do
