Why so much concern over Omicron?
WHO has classified this new variant as B.1.1.529 variant or Omicron. He says that it can spread faster than other variants. The Delta variant is still the most strongly spread around the world. In the US, 99.9 percent of corona cases are of the delta variant. Dr. Graham Sinder, medical director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the US, says that it is not yet certain whether the new variant will even be able to replace the delta variant. But the new variant carries more than 30 mutations in the target part of the vaccine. It has a big hand in speeding up new infections in South Africa.
