At least eight people were injured when a “pressure cooker bomb” exploded in a packed government office on Sunday in Siraha in Lahan district of southeastern Nepal. The ‘Kathmandu Post’ newspaper quoted Assistant Chief District Officer Krishna Kumar Niraula as saying that the bomb exploded on the first floor of the Land Revenue Office. According to the newspaper, at least eight employees were injured in the blast, including five men and three women.
DSP Tapan Dahal said that three seriously injured people are undergoing treatment at Saptarishi Hospital in Lahan while the other injured have been admitted to Lahan Hospital. The Democratic Terai Mukti Morcha (revolutionary), an armed organization led by Jai Krishna Goit, has claimed responsibility for the blast, according to the ‘My Republica’ newspaper, saying it is part of the organization’s campaign against corruption.
In a statement released a few hours after the incident, the organization said, “We had planted a bomb in the pressure cooker at 12:47 pm as an action against corruption.” The statement said that if corruption continues, more stringent action will be taken and the Nepal government and the provincial government will be responsible for it. The Democratic Terai Mukti Morcha demands to give greater political and economic rights to the people of the plain Terai areas bordering India.
