Two items of labor tools quietly derailed on back-to-back days on the Blue and Red Lines, an MBTA spokesperson confirmed.
The derailments occurred inside a roughly eight-hour timeframe on the Blue and Red Lines Monday evening and Tuesday morning, respectively, following constructive press protection that accompanied Phillip Eng’s first day as MBTA normal supervisor.
T spokesperson Joe Pesaturo stated a “rail-borne vehicle with welding equipment derailed at a track switch near Orient Heights” Monday evening, whereas Blue Line service was suspended for beforehand scheduled observe work.
“There were no injuries nor damage, and the vehicle was re-railed before 1 a.m.,” Pesaturo stated. “Regularly scheduled Blue Line service was operating at the start of service this morning.”
Another derailment occurred at roughly 7:15 a.m. the subsequent morning, when “the back wheels of a piece of work equipment came off the rails on a track siding along the Red Line,” Pesaturo stated.
There have been no accidents or harm from the Red Line derailment, and repair was not impacted, Pesaturo stated.
Both incidents have been reported to the Federal Transit Administration and the T’s state security oversight authority, the Department of Public Utilities, he stated.
What precipitated the tools to derail is beneath investigation.
Derailments have been among the many issues of safety the FTA cited when launching its months-long investigation of the T’s subway system final spring.
