Mirabai Chanu wins Silver Medal : Indian women’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has opened the account of first medals for India in Tokyo Olympics. Chanu has won silver medal in 49 kg category. Chanu won the medal by lifting a total of 202 kg from 115 kg in clean and jerk and 87 kg in snatch. Chanu ended India’s 21-year wait for a medal in the Olympic Games weightlifting competition. Earlier, Karnam Malleswari won the country a bronze medal in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics 2000.
Chinese weightlifter won gold medal
China’s Hou Zhioui lifted the gold medal by lifting a total of 210 kg (94 kg in snatch, 116 kg in clean and jerk). Indonesia’s Aisah Windi Kantika won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 194 kg. Mirabai became the champion of Weightlifting Championship (48 kg) in 2017. He won the 86 kg snatch and a world record 119 kg weight title in April the same year. Chanu had a disappointing performance in the 2016 Rio Olympics but after that, she continued to improve her game. He won the gold medal at the World Championships in 2017 and the Commonwealth in 2018.
