The candidates vying for the Republican nomination to be the following lieutenant governor met for debate Monday, with each declaring their marketing campaign’s plan one of the best path ahead for the state and the opposite aspect unable to beat the Democratic nominee.
“We are the team that will protect your wallet, protect your freedom and protect your children,” former state Rep. Leah Cole Allen mentioned.
“Our commonwealth is at a crossroads and the decision we make on September 6 will have wide-ranging consequences for Massachusetts,” former state Rep. Kate Campanale responded.
Both hope to be the following candidate to exchange outgoing Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, who introduced alongside Gov. Charlie Baker final 12 months that she wouldn’t be in search of a 3rd time period.
Allen is operating alongside the Republican conference winner, former state Rep. Geoff Diehl, and Campanale alongside Wrentham businessman Chris Doughty.
“There’s too much at stake to come in second this November. So if you remember just one thing from this debate: we can choose a team that everyone knows will lose to Maura Healey and return our state to a single-party control — we know that will happen because we’ve seen that movie with Geoff Diehl — or we can choose a team that has the experience, the resources and momentum,” Campanale mentioned.
“You want to bash Geoff Diehl for being a career politician and then bash me for not being a career politician,” Allen responded. “I think that voters need to realize that I’m in this because I care about the issues — Geoff Diehl cares about the issues — we’re standing up for the people of Massachusetts. We’re here to protect your wallet, protect your freedom and protect your children in their schools.”
Both campaigns appeared to suppose their candidates received.
“Kate performed very well and was the clear winner of the debate proving that she is ready to be the next Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts,” Doughty mentioned in a launch.
“There is no question that Leah Allen distinguished herself as by far the winner of today’s Lieutenant Governor debate,” Diehl’s marketing campaign supervisor informed the Herald.
The Democratic candidates will debate Tuesday at 11 a.m. at WBUR’s CitySpace.
Monday’s debate was moderated by WBUR’s Steve Brown and Darryl C. Murphy and WCVB’s Sharman Sacchetti.
