Amritsar. An Uttar Pradesh man, who allegedly attempted sabotage at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, was thrashed by an angry mob on Saturday evening, leading to his death. The incident took place when the man reached the place where the Sikh scripture was reciting the holy Guru Granth Sahib after lifting his sword by climbing the golden grille at the holy site.
The man was apprehended by members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) task force. When he was being taken to the SGPC office, an angry mob thrashed him badly, after which he died. Deputy Commissioner of Police PS Bhandal said the man, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was around 30 years old and his identity is being ascertained.

All CCTV cameras are being checked as to when he entered the Golden Temple and how many people were with him. Following the incident, a large number of Sikh pilgrims and various Sikh organizations criticized the SGPC for its laxity. Heavy police force has been deployed around the SGPC premises at Teja Singh Samundari Hall to maintain law and order. (agency)
