The statue of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in a park in California in the US was not only damaged by unknown chaotic elements, but also dropped. After this shameful incident came to light, there is anger among the Indian-American community across the country. Those people have described it as Hate Crime and have demanded that the culprits be caught and punished soon. At the same time, India on Saturday strongly condemned the incident that damaged the statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed in the city of Davis in the state of California.
India has raised this issue with the US government and has demanded appropriate action against those who committed this abominable act. Let me tell you that this statue gifted by India was installed in the Central Park of the city and on 28th January, an incident to damage it was revealed. This bronze statue of six feet high and weighing about 300 kg was found in the Central Park of the City of Davis in Northern California, Northern California. Looking at it, it looks like it has been cut from the bottom and the face has been damaged.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the Government of India strongly condemns the malicious and hateful acts of the globally respected figure as a symbol of peace and justice. The ministry said that the Indian embassy in Washington has taken up the matter with the US State Department and seriously investigated the case and demanded appropriate action against those responsible for the incident. The State Department said that the US State Department said that the incident damaged the statue is unacceptable and hoped that the culprits would be brought to justice as soon as possible.
According to the statement, the Consulate General of India, San Francisco, has separately taken up the matter with the City of Davis and local law enforcement officials, who have begun an investigation into the case. The Foreign Ministry reported that the mayor of Davis city expressed deep regret over the incident and informed that they had begun an investigation. The ministry said that organizations of the local Indian community have also condemned the incident of sabotage. This is not the first time that the Mahatma Gandhi statue has been mistreated in America. In December 2020, Khalistan supporters damaged the statue in front of the Indian Embassy in Washington DC.
