Mumbai: With a view to dilute the powers of the Governor, the Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday decided to amend its Public Universities Act to empower the state government to recommend names for the posts of Vice-Chancellor before the Governor. The Governor is the Chancellor of the State Universities and appoints the Vice-Chancellors on the basis of the recommendations of a committee.
A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 will be amended and the state government will be empowered to recommend names for the posts of Vice-Chancellor before the Governor.
As per the current provision of the Act, a Vice-Chancellor is appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of a committee consisting of a nominee of the Chancellor, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher and Technical Education, Is the director or head of a national institution established by an Act of Parliament.

The Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of Congress and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari have clashed several times on various issues. Meanwhile, the Cabinet also gave its approval for withdrawal of three Bills related to amendment in Agriculture, Co-operation, Food and Civil Supplies to deal with agricultural laws made by the Central Government.
These three bills were introduced in the monsoon session of the state legislature in July this year. Along with repeal of agricultural laws by the Centre, the state government will also withdraw the bills in the winter session of the state assembly. The winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will begin in Mumbai from December 22.(Agency)
