Lakhimpur Kheri Violence Live Updates: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, where farmers were allegedly rammed into a car on October 3, triggering a violent reaction. Eight people, including four farmers, have died in the violence that broke out during the farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Chief Justice N.V. A bench headed by Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hema Kohli will hear the matter on Thursday. The matter has been listed as loss of life due to violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Retired judge of Allahabad HC to probe violence
The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a one-member commission to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. The Yogi government has entrusted the investigation of the entire incident to Pradeep Kumar Srivastava, retired judge of Allahabad High Court. Srivastava has been asked to submit the investigation report of the entire matter within two months.
Rahul-Priyanka meet the victims
Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday met the families of those killed in Sunday’s violence in Lakhimpur Kheri and promised them all possible help. Congress leaders first met the relatives of the deceased farmer Lovepreet Singh of Palia on Wednesday night.
Congress sources said that the Congress leader reached the farmer’s residence at Chaukhra Farm, where he spoke to the bereaved family and expressed deep condolences to them. The delegation included Congress national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and former party president Rahul Gandhi, besides Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
SP-BSP leaders will meet today
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and BSP general secretary will visit Lakhimpur on Thursday and meet the families of the deceased farmers. Apart from this, a delegation of AAP also reached Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday and met the families of the victims of the violence. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also spoke to the victim’s family over phone.
