Karnataka’s renowned environmentalist Tulsi Gowda was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday. Tulsi Gowda was awarded the Padma Shri for planting more than 30,000 saplings and being involved in environmental protection activities for the past six decades. The pictures of Tulsi Gowda barefoot and wearing traditional dhoti-like clothes are becoming fiercely viral on social media, which has won the hearts of people.
From common users to politicians and celebrities, they are praising Tulsi by sharing her picture. In a viral picture, PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are seen greeting him with folded hands. PM Modi also posted this picture on Instagram. In a photograph, Prime Minister Modi was also seen holding the environmentalist’s hand and talking to him. Tulsi, 77, is known today as the Encyclopedia of Forests. He is called by this name because of his vast knowledge on various species of plants and herbs. Tulsi Gowda, a resident of Honali village in Karnataka, has worked for the environment for more than six decades and has planted over 30,000 saplings.
When Tulsi Gowda reached President Kovind to receive the Padma Shri award, she was seen in a traditional dress. Seeing his simplicity, for a moment all the people present there were also surprised and praised him. Prime Minister Modi himself was impressed by seeing him. When she reached in front of PM Modi and Amit Shah, both respected her achievement and saluted her.
Born in a poor family, Tulsi Gowda lost her father at the age of two. As a very young child she started working with her mother in a local nursery. She never went to school and they were married when she was not even in her teens. After working for over 30 years in a government nursery, he was offered a permanent job in the forest department. Where she retired at the age of 70 after working there for 15 years.
