Despite the worldwide vaccination campaign, the corona epidemic is not being controlled. Still a large number of people are dying due to corona infection in many countries. Meanwhile, there has been a stir in India after the case of a sub-variant of the delta train. This sub-variant named AY.4.2 is said to be 10 to 15 percent more infectious than the original Delta variant.
The newest variant of Corona, which is causing havoc in many countries of the world including Britain, Russia and Israel, Delta Plus AY.4.2 (Delta Plus- AY.4.2) has now knocked in India as well. India’s Corona Genomic Surveillance Project is on high alert after cases of subline AY.4.2 of the delta variant of SARS CoV 2 were detected in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
This new variant of Corona, named AY.4.2, was first identified in Britain. This virus is now coming to the fore in India as well, although the number of infected people is said to be very less. About 17 samples of the SARS-CoV2 variant have been identified in India called AY.4.2.
According to a Times of India report, seven cases of this new variant were detected in Indore in the genome sequencing report released from the National Center of Disease Control (NCDC). Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr BS Saitya said that two of the infected people are army officers posted in Mhow Cantonment.
At the same time, new Delta AY.4 variants have been detected in 1 percent of the samples in Maharashtra. Scientists have indicated that the new variant may be more contagious and even more lethal than the delta strain. The health agency said in its report that the AY.4.2 delta variant accounts for about 6 percent of all sequences. The report states that the Delta remains the dominant variant.
ICMR scientist Dr. Samiran Panda told News18.com that the new covid variant AY.4.2 seems to be highly transmissible but may not be fatal. He also said that there is no need to panic but everyone should continue to follow the Covid guidelines. He said that we should not create panic, but it is necessary to increase vigilance and follow the proper behavior of Covid.
Rakesh Mishra, former director of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), said on Monday that there is no evidence that the infectivity rate of the sub-lineage AY.4.2 of the delta variant of the corona exceeds delta. Experts say that cases of AY.4.2 variants have definitely been reported in India, although its cases are less than 0.1 percent at present.
