Bangalore. Higher schools in Karnataka reopened on Monday. High schools were closed in the wake of untoward incidents in some parts of the state following a controversy over the hijab. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in sensitive areas of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada and Bengaluru. However, there have been sporadic incidents in some places regarding the hijab.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday exuded confidence that peace and normalcy would prevail in the state. He had also said that a decision regarding the reopening of pre-university and degree colleges would be taken after assessing the situation. In the wake of the hijab controversy, the government on Friday said the holiday declared for colleges under the Department of Higher Education and the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE) has been extended till February 16.

The Karnataka High Court, in its interim order, had requested the state government to reopen educational institutions and all students to wear saffron shawls, scarves, hijabs and any religious flag inside the classroom during the pendency of all petitions related to hijab. Wearing was prohibited.
