The victory of the Congress candidate in the by-poll to the Hangal Assembly seat of Karnataka is a big defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This assembly seat comes in the home district of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. In such a situation, many questions can arise within many parties regarding this defeat. However, it is a matter of relief for the BJP that it has won the Sindgi assembly seat by a big margin in the by-poll. By-elections were held for a total of two assembly seats in Karnataka.
Congress candidate Srinivas Mane won by-election to Hangal Assembly seat by a margin of 7598 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Shivraja Sajjanar in the election. On the other hand, BJP candidate Ramesh Bhusanur won the Sindagi assembly seat by a margin of 31,185 votes. He got a total of 93,865 votes. While Congress candidate Ashok Manguli came second with 62,680 votes.

Chief Minister Bommai had campaigned a lot to win the BJP candidate in Hangal assembly seat. According to political experts, the contest was very tough due to the popularity of the Congress candidate in this area. Bommai, who recently completed 100 days as chief minister, was hoping to cement himself further in the party with this victory. Although this defeat has left the Bommai camp disappointed, while their opponents are happy inside.
Hangal Vidhan Sabha is the neighboring assembly of Bommai, the first Chief Minister of Karnataka and BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa. Yeddyurappa has been almost silent ever since he was ousted from the chief minister’s post and this too seems to have contributed to the BJP’s defeat in the Hangal assembly.

Officially, Yediyurappa had campaigned in favor of the BJP candidate here, but not as loudly. Another big BJP leader from this area is Jagdish Shettar and he has been the Chief Minister of Karnataka in the past. Shettar was also not active in the area during the election campaign. Local political experts say that the Lingayat sub-caste politics also worked against the BJP candidate.
On behalf of the main opposition party Congress, its state president DK Shivakumar and the leader of opposition in the state Siddaramaiah campaigned aggressively till the last day, which encouraged the party workers. The personal popularity of the winning Congress candidate, Srinivas Mane, also played a major role in Bommai’s defeat in his constituency. Srinivas Mane was the Congress candidate from this seat in the 2018 assembly elections. However, he lost by a narrow margin to late BJP leader and former Chief Minister Udasi. However, during the lockdown, Srinivas Mane did a lot of social work in his area, which benefited him in this election.

The victory in the Hangal assembly seat is expected to boost the morale of Congress workers across the state. On the other hand, the opposition faction of Bommai in BJP may demand accountability from him. Also, if the party wants Yeddyurappa’s services in the coming days, then he too can demand something from the party in return.
Big defeat of Congress in Sindagi assembly
The victory of the BJP in the Sindgi assembly with a huge vote can come as a surprise for the Congress. Congress had made a leader from JDS here as its candidate. The BJP’s victory in Sindgi is being contributed to the work of PWD Minister Govind Karjol, who was the BJP in-charge for this assembly seat.
On the other hand, if we talk about JDS, then JDS had fielded Muslim candidates in both the seats. However, its candidates could not save their deposits in both the seats and had to face a bad defeat.
