In the case of the death of a black man named George Floyd in police custody, the Minneapolis City Council has agreed to a settlement of $ 2.7 million to be paid to his family. Council members held a separate meeting to settle Floyd’s family’s civil rights claim in the case, and then returned to the courtroom to announce this amount, with a consensus decision.
Significantly, on May 25 last year, Derek Chauvin, a then white officer, held Floyd’s neck with his knees for about nine minutes, after which he died. Floyd’s family lawyer, Ben Crump, described it as the largest settlement before a civil rights claim.
Just one step towards justice
He said that there has to be a long way for justice. This is just one step taken in the direction of justice. L. Chris Stewart, another lawyer who works for the Floyd family, said that the amount of the settlement would change the assessment of civil rights of a black person upon his death.
Following Floyd’s death, violent protests took place in Minneapolis and throughout the United States and voices were raised against racial discrimination nationwide under the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Floyd’s family filed a federal civil rights violation lawsuit in July against the city administration, Chouvin and three other sacked officials, accusing Chouvin and three other officials for his death.
‘No amount of money can bring Floyd back’
City Council chief Lisa Bender was strangled when she was addressing the press conference. He said that no amount of money can bring Floyd back. He told Floyd’s family that I just wanted to tell you to what extent we are connected with you. However, it is not yet clear how the agreement will affect the trial or the trial jury.
However, Crump said that the one thing we do know is that in the case of black people, there is no guarantee that a police officer will be convicted for killing a black person in our country. He said that this is what we have known from history. At the same time, Stewart said that the civil rights case has nothing to do with the trial of the case.
