Indian Railways generated 6.40 lakh ‘man-days’ during the Corona period


Indian Railways has taken a major initiative to provide employment to migrant workers in the era of Coronavirus Pandemic. Indian Railways has generated more than 6.40 lakh human working days in 6 states Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh under ‘Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan‘. Railway and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal are monitoring the progress of these projects and the employment opportunities created for the migrant workers of these states under this scheme. Around 165 rail infra projects are running in these states.

According to the Ministry of Railways, till August 21, 2020, 12,276 workers have been linked to this campaign and Rs 1,410.35 crore has been paid to the contractors for the ongoing projects. Railways have appointed nodal officers in each district as well as states so that coordination with the state government can be properly coordinated.

Work on several projects in Railways

  • Railways have identified some special works on which work is going on under this scheme. There are six main among them.
  • Construction and maintenance of subways for level crossings of railways
  • Development and cleanliness of waterways, trenches and drains along railway tracks
  • Construction and maintenance of subways for railway stations?
  • Repairs and widening of existing railways (embankments) / byways
  • Planting of trees on the last boundary of railway land
  • Protection of existing bridges (embankments) / byways

PM Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan starts from 20 June

On 20 June 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a massive employment-cum-rural public works campaign under the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan. The aim of which is to empower migrant laborers returning to their areas/villages in large numbers due to fear of COVID-19 epidemic and provide them livelihood opportunities in their village itself. The Prime Minister has announced that under the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan, an amount of Rs 50,000 crore will be spent for the construction of Sustainable Rural Infrastructure.

This 125-day campaign is being run in mission mode and involves the focused implementation of 25 classes of tasks/activities in 116 districts. Each of these districts belongs to 6 states – Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Odisha where there are a large number of returning migrant labourers. During this campaign, a financial resource of Rs. 50 thousand crores will be available for public works to be started.
