Vivek Wadhwa: Author and entrepreneur Vivek Wadhwa, Distinguished Fellow, Harvard Law School and Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, said that India should follow the example of China to establish control over technology companies. He said this in an interview given to Moneycontrol.
China felt the loss
He said, “I rarely support China, but the government there has realized the damage caused by these technologies. They are now leading the world in managing the crisis of polarizing.” He was talking about the way technology companies are polarizing opinion to increase engagement on their platforms. He believes that this can also be the reason for the rise of religious fanaticism in India.

Companies became aware of the loss
WhatsApp has become synonymous with propaganda and platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have personalised features, filtering out ideas and deepening divisions. Companies have become aware of the harm they are doing themselves, but they are maintaining the features of the hook users.
Companies are responsible for propaganda in China
He said, “China is tightening the noose on this industry. They are trying to regulate algorithms, they are asking for better privacy controls and telling them that they will be held accountable if there is propaganda on the platforms. Therefore, if WeChat (a Chinese app that supports messaging, payments and social media conversations) is spreading propaganda, its officials can be jailed. India should be alert and do so.”

China made law
Earlier this month, China passed a law that seeks to control the algorithms that are at the heart of the working of these platforms. Companies cannot use an algorithm that is against the law of a country that puts national security at risk. In August 2021, China passed a data privacy law that obliges tech companies to improve the security of their user data. Companies will now have to take the consent of the user before mining the data, guidelines will have to be followed before sending the data outside the country. Also, to ensure proper handling of data, audits will have to be conducted from time to time.
