Amidst the shortage of corona vaccines in the country, only nine big private hospitals of the country had bought 60.57 lakh vaccines out of the total available 1.20 crore in May. In May itself, the government revised the vaccine policy and opened it for the market. After this, fifty percent of the vaccines were bought from the nine big hospitals group. The remaining 50 percent of the vaccines were also bought by 300 hospitals located in most cities. Hardly some of these vaccines would have gone outside tier-two cities.
The Center had allowed state governments and private institutions to buy 50 percent of the total vaccine production of vaccine manufacturers from May 1. The Center had limited its procurement to only 50 per cent. These vaccines were to be given to the states so that they could vaccinate those above 45 years of age.
Only 22 lakh doses have been taken in 1.20 crore doses.
According to the news of the Indian Express, in May all private hospitals together would have bought 1.20 crore doses of vaccines. This is 15.6 percent of the total 7.94 crore doses purchased so far. Out of these 1.20 crore doses, only 22 lakh doses i.e. 18 percent have been applied so far. The states have procured 33.5 per cent i.e. 2.66 crore doses so far this month and the Center has procured 50.9 i.e. 4.03 crore doses.

Manipal Health – 3.24 lakh doses
Techno India – 2.26 Lakh Doses
Narayan Hrudayalaya -2.02 lakh doses

Most of the vaccines near private hospitals in Tier-1 cities
The top nine private hospital groups in the private sector that have bought the most vaccines are Apollo Hospitals, Max Healthcare, Reliance Foundation’s hospital HN Hospital Group, Medica Hospital, Fortis Healthcare, Godrej, Manipal Health, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Techno India Dama . All these hospitals are in state capitals or tier-1 cities. Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech is selling a dose to the government for Rs 150. Whereas for private hospitals, Serum Institute’s Vaccine Covishield costs Rs 600. Bharat Biotech’s vaccine Covaccine costs Rs 1200 for private hospitals.
