Delta Plus variant Explainer : Corona’s new variant Delta Plus has increased the concern about this epidemic. This new variant has emerged as a challenge for every country of the world including India. Scientists are engaged in its genome sequencing. The Consortium on COVID Genome Sequencing will soon issue a bulletin in this regard. The central government is closely monitoring the cases of Delta Plus so that steps can be taken to prevent its spread.
Dr Shubhradeep Karmakar, Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at AIIMS, said that nothing can be said on what color the Delta Plus variant will show. He said that each variant comes with different clinical response. The oxygen level was decreasing in the previous variant but we don’t know how the results for the Delta Plus variant will hold up. The delta variant had a role in the second wave becoming very dangerous in India.
Where was the Delta Plus variant first detected?
The Delta variant was first detected in Europe in March this year. According to the scientists, the delta variant (B.1.617.2) got mutated in the data plus (AY.1) variant. There is speculation that this mutant is more contagious and spreads 35-60 per cent faster than the alpha variant. However, he does not consider this variant to be a cause for concern.
Experts have warned that the Delta Plus variant may show resistance against the monoclonal antibody cocktail treatment. One concern is that this variant may also penetrate the vaccine and immunity to early infection. As of now , there is no strong indication that this variant is more contagious than the other variants . The country’s well-known virologist Professor Shahid Jameel has said that it is a matter of concern but not of panic. It is yet to be seen whether the Delta Plus variant can penetrate past immunity.
Is Delta Plus more contagious?
The mutation of Delta Plus is called K417N. It was found in the beta variant found in South Africa. The Delta Plus gets other features of the Delta variant. This can make this variant more contagious. However, only a few scientists think so.
What is the current status of Delta Plus in India?
According to the data, the prevalence of the Delta Plus variant in India is still very low. At present, there is a proliferation of Delta variants in the country but the infection of Delta Plus is minor. Apart from Maharashtra, some cases of Delta Plus are visible in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Delta Plus is not placed in the category of Variant of cocern. Scientists are engaged in its genome sequencing. The Consortium on its Genome Sequencing will soon issue a bulletin in this regard.

Can a third wave of corona come from Delta Plus
There is no definite opinion on this at the moment. So far no such indication has been found, from which it can be said that this may lead to a third wave.
Will the current vaccine work against Delta Plus?
Nothing can be said at the moment. Both the Indian corona vaccines have proved to be three to eight times less effective against delta and beta. Maharashtra may have said that the new Delta Plus variant may bring a third wave, but so far no expert has supported it.
