As soon as the bench started hearing the matter, the Chief Justice asked Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi to open schools in the state. He said that closing the schools is not a good move. Take necessary action and conduct classes. Check to see that no problems arise. The state government on Tuesday declared a three-day holiday from Wednesday in all schools and colleges in the state amid tension and violence over the matter.
Earlier, a single bench headed by Justice Dixit had heard the matter, which has taken the form of a major crisis in the state and has also been discussed internationally. He had earlier decided to hear the matter by a larger bench. He directed the Registrar of the High Court to immediately submit the documents and petitions to the Chief Justice, as the matter is extremely important and needs urgent hearing.
The hijab controversy started last month after some girl students of Udupi Government Pre-University College wearing hijab entered the college campus, who were not allowed to attend classes. The college authorities say that the girl students who used to come without hijab earlier have suddenly started coming in hijab. Later, the girl students protested, refusing to attend classes without hijab. Gradually this issue became a controversy and this issue is being raised in other districts of Karnataka as well as in other states. Because of this there is tension.
