In the last few years, Freshworks has rapidly become a well-known name in the start-up world of India. The full credit for this goes to the founder of the company, Girish Mathrubootham. In founding the company, he displayed a very forward-thinking approach to execution and establishment in a very simple way. However, Mathrubootham’s journey actually started somewhere else.
Born and brought up in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, Girish started his educational career as an engineering student. Initially, he discovered a skill to learn things his own way and eventually went to Madras University to pursue MBA in Marketing.
He had an average start to his professional career, but the turning point came when he joined Zoho Corporation as Director of Product Manager. After a two-year stint in that role, he made a move at the company and achieved the position of Vice President of Product Management.
After nearly half a decade with Zoho, he founded his own company, initially known as Freshdesk. It was established as the pre-existing and cumbersome business software solution prevalent in the industry.
Freshworks IPO made more than 500 millionaires in the country, 70 of them under 30
Girish wanted to create a cloud-based client service software, which was completely focused on its customers. They did exactly that and in June 2017, the company was officially rebranded as Freshworks.
The company saw such growth under this business titan that it became the first Indian software maker to be listed on Nasdaq after raising over $1.03 billion through its IPO. It also managed to record a market cap of around $1.13 billion.
FreshWorks Co.’s share price rose 33 percent to $48 in early trading on the Nasdaq. This brought the market cap to about $13 billion.
It would be fair to say that the CEO has done his duty well to fulfill his dream. It can be said that he is a person who still sticks to his roots.
Freshworks creates history, becomes first Indian SaaS company to be listed in US
Girish told MoneyControl in an interview that about 76 percent of the employees of the company own shares, due to this, more than 500 of them have become millionaires, of whom about 70 are less than 30 years of age.
After getting listed on Nasdaq, Girish took to Twitter to thank his employees, his investors and customers for taking the company to this height. “Today is a dream come true for me – from a small start in Trichy to Freshworks IPO in Nasdaq. Thank you to our employees, customers, partners and investors for believing in this dream,” the tweet read.
No one has any idea how an engineering student from Trichy set up such a big firm, but one thing is clear and that is his business-savvy attitude. Even in his early days, when he was engaged in setting up the company, he knew what approach to adopt.
This is being said about Girish because Software as a Service (SaaS) was a rapidly emerging market at that time and Girish knew how to take full advantage of it.
