The government presented the Economic Survey 2021-22 in a different way this time. Till last year, the Economic Survey was presented in two volumes. However, this time the government introduced it in only one section i.e. one volume. Along with this, the number of pages of the Economic Survey was also reduced by half this year. While last year’s Economic Survey was presented in about 900 pages, this time it is only 413 pages.
Along with this, the Economic Survey has called the traditional two-volume format ‘bye-bye’, which was first adopted in 199192. The preface to the Economic Survey report said, “The two-volume format provided room for new ideas and topics, but it became increasingly large in size. Hence, the new format has been adopted from this year onwards.”
The survey report said, “If we look at the history of the Economic Survey, it was first released in 1950-51. At that time it was only a part of the budget and its size was less than 50 pages. In 1957-58 So the Economic Survey report of only 38 pages was released. However, later on, its size increased due to the inclusion of economic activities and various tables related to it.

The report further said, “The Economic Survey of 1962-63 was divided into two parts. The first part focused on comprehensive economic development, while the second part did a basic analysis of various sectors. The survey report was taken out of the budget and presented as a separate document a day before the budget. By 1990, the size of the Economic Survey had reached about 250 pages with a statistical appendix. Gone.”
The survey report said, “In the year 1991, the Indian economy went through a major crisis and after that, many reforms were made one after the other in the Economic Survey report. After the reforms, the Economic Survey report of the year 1991-92 was eagerly awaited. This was the first survey report, in which it was presented in two volumes. In this, the first section was a 27-page short booklet, in which the macroeconomic problems being faced by the country were highlighted, while the second section covered various sectors in detail. The review was done.”
The report further said, “Sarva’s expansion had crossed 380 pages by the early 2000s. During the global economic crisis in 2007-08 and 2008-09, a chapter was added to it, covering the broader challenges and prospects of the economy. Chapters on more subjects were added to it every year thereafter. In 2011-12, the document was 485 pages with thirteen chapters and a statistical appendix.”

“In 2013-14, the statistical addendum was dismantled and released in addition to both volumes. The next year, the survey was again presented in two volumes. Thematic policy in the first volume,” the report said. There were several chapters dealing with the issues, while the second volume contained statistical appendices as well as the traditional Economic Review. The same format was continued till last year, increasing the size of the document. The volume had 335 pages, the second volume 368 pages and the statistical appendix 174 pages, taking the total size of the Economic Survey to an astonishing 877 pages.
From this year, the government has started presenting the Economic Survey in one section. Till now the first section had thematic chapters, while the second part would have traditional sector based chapters. These two have now been combined into a single volume, while the Statistical Appendix has been released as a separate part.
