Will be elevated till Thane
According to MMRDA officials, there was a plan to extend the free way from Shivaji Nagar to Ghatkopar, but it was postponed due to the problem of mangroves etc. In the new plan, the Eastern Free Way elevated road will be from Chheda Nagar Junction to Thane. This decision has been taken in the budget proposal of MMRDA last week on the scheme proposed by Urban Development Minister and MMRDA Chairperson Eknath Shinde. In view of the increasing traffic on the Eastern Express Highway, an elevated road has been planned from Ghatkopar to Thane.
Link to South Mumbai
Without getting down on the Eastern Express Highway, South Mumbai will be directly linked to Thane and beyond by Samriddhi Express. The Eastern Free Way has two north-bound and two south-bound ones. At present, the Eastern Free Way of 16.8 km connects the Eastern Express Highway at Ghatkopar with P DeMello Road.
Freeway construction in 2014
The authority had completed the construction of the freeway in 2014. For this land was acquired from Mumbai Port Trust. The Eastern Free Way has four lanes to the north and south. This will make it easy to reach South Mumbai directly.
Pune Expressway to connect with MTHL
Similarly, MMRDA plans to connect the Mumbai-Pune Expressway with the under-construction Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL). The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is one of the busiest routes. Traveling on this highway becomes difficult during monsoons. This scheme will help commuters to reach Pune directly from Worli in South Mumbai without getting stuck in traffic. Travel time will be saved by more than an hour. There are also plans to connect MTHL with NH-17, which will go towards Bangalore.
6 km link-way
According to officials, tender has been invited for appointment of consultant for DPR for connectivity of MTHL to Mumbai-Pune Expressway. As per the plan, MTHL will land at Chirle in Navi Mumbai, which is at a distance of 6 kms from the expressway. A link-way will be created and connected to the expressway.
