A massive earthquake of 6.9 magnitude occurred at 7.49 am on April 14, 2010 in China’s Qinghai province. The epicenter of the earthquake was Reema, a small village located in Yusu district. The earthquake occurred in an area surrounded by Indian and Eurasian plates. The collision of these two plates led to the rise of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas. The place around the epicenter of the earthquake was badly destroyed. On feeling the tremors, people started running away from their homes. The tremors of the earthquake stopped in a while, but then the aftershock completed the right task.
More than 12 thousand people injured
In Yusu, a total of 15,000 houses were found in the soil and about one lakh people had come under the open sky in the harsh winter without any roof. The thing to note here was that the Tibetan plateau is situated at an altitude of 13 thousand feet. In such a situation, the temperature drops below zero at night. This area of China is quite backward and isolated. Due to this people had to face much difficulty. Most of the houses located in this area were made of mud, which could not bear the brunt of the earthquake. About 2,698 people died and more than 12 thousand people were injured due to the earthquake.
The relief team suffered due to being isolated from the area
The Chinese government started relief and rescue operations soon after the earthquake. A large number of soldiers were sent to the area with food items. But this area was so isolated that the relief team was facing difficulty in reaching here and unloading heavy goods. Due to landslides, most of the road blocks in the area had been done. In such a situation, help could be reached only by air route. A large number of Buddhist monks lived here. Many Buddhist monks died during prayer.
Blankets distributed to people to avoid winter
Given the icy temperatures, it was the government’s priority to distribute coats and blankets to homeless people. The government distributed blankets to the homeless people here. Three hydroelectric plants present here were destroyed due to the earthquake. Due to this, the electricity of the area was lost. Two weeks later, a station here started generating electricity. Meanwhile, electricity was restored in the area through a generator and an emergency station. China has brought relief to the suffering families here on a large scale.
