Highway Construction: Due to the second wave of Corona, many parts of the country were under lockdown/restrictions in the current financial year 2021-22. Most of the activities had slowed down during this period, but when it comes to the construction of highways, there was a jump of 25 percent on an annual basis. In the last quarter April-June 2021, 2284 km of highways were constructed i.e. 25.37 km per day. This speed of construction of the highway is even more than the construction done before the corona epidemic. Earlier, in the first quarter of the financial year 2019-20, April-June 2019, highways were constructed at the rate of 23.29 km per day. However, in the last financial year, in 2020-21, highways were constructed at a record rate of 36.4 km per day, which is 11.03 km per day more than the previous quarter. According to Icra, according to the pace of construction, according to it, construction can reach 40 km per day in the current financial year.
Record construction expected in FY22
Analysts believe that during the pandemic, the government actively took many such industry-friendly decisions, due to which highway construction increased in the last quarter. The decisions of the government ensured the availability of sufficient cash with the contractors. According to Rajeshwar Burla of Icra, during the second wave of Corona, the state governments had approved the construction and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways actively released the payments to the contractors. Due to this, the work was not affected by the epidemic. According to Burla, according to the work being done, highways can be constructed at the rate of 40 km per day in the financial year 2022.
