The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its new bulletin has predicted very heavy rains in seven states of India due to Cyclone Shaheen, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. This new weather alert for Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat comes after Cyclone Gulab hit the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on September 26, in which three people lost their lives.
According to the IMD bulletin, the deep pressure, which has now intensified into Cyclone Shaheen, lies near Pakistan and Iran apart from India. As of 5.30 am on Friday, Shaheen was about 400 km west-northwest of Devbhoomi Dwarka in Gujarat, 260 km south-southwest of Karachi in Pakistan and 530 km east-southeast of Chabahar Port in Iran.
Shaheen’s arrival is a result of the remnants of Cyclone Gulab. Earlier, IMD cyclone in-charge, Sunita Devi told Hindustan Times that the chances of the remnants of Cyclone Gulab turning into a new cyclone are “less”, but the possibility cannot be ruled out.
Meanwhile, an Additional Low Pressure Area over South Bihar and its neighboring Jharkhand is now lying over South-West Bihar and its neighbourhood. The IMD has already said that the process of withdrawal of the ongoing monsoon is expected to start from some areas of Northwest India from October 6.
Cyclone Gulab has so far engulfed many states including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha and West Bengal.
Here is the new IMD alert for the states which will receive very heavy rain due to the upcoming Cyclone Shaheen:
The IMD bulletin has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 1 and 2. Very Heavy Rain – More than 20 cm of rain, likely to occur in isolated areas of Bihar on Friday.
