Covid-19 vaccination for kids: Soon children will also be vaccinated with anti-coronavirus. According to a government source, the government is preparing a guideline regarding the COVID-19 vaccination of people below the age of 18 years. It is expected to be announced by the end of next week. According to the data, till now 70 percent of the adult population of the country has received at least one dose of the anti-coronavirus vaccine.
Talking to The Indian Express, the source said that a decision on how to vaccinate children in a phased manner or which category of children to be given priority can be taken at the beginning of the month. The results of Bharat Biotech’s clinical trial of Covaxin on children are also expected to be submitted to the Drug Controller General of India for emergency use approval around October 20-21. The COVID-19 Standing Committee of the National Technical Advisory Group of Immunization (NTAGI) will submit its scientific recommendations on the vaccine rollout for children to the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVEC) over the next few days.
NEGVEC is chaired by Dr VK Paul, head of India’s COVID-19 Task Force and is co-chaired by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan. According to the information, a decision will be taken by them regarding how to give priority to different categories of children in vaccination. Sources said that in the first phase, the vaccine ZycoV-D of Zydus Cadila will be used. The use of this vaccine has already been approved for people above 12 years.
Meanwhile, NTAGI is studying the size of the vulnerable group as well as examining scientific data on comorbidities in children. After the recommendations of NTAGI in this regard, NEGVEC will make a final guideline regarding vaccine rollout. Bharat Biotech is evaluating the immunity, responsiveness and safety of Covaxin in healthy people over the age of two years at six sites. Another nano-particle protein-based vaccine, Kovovax, will also be tested on children at 23 locations across the country. This vaccine is the Indian version of US-based Novovax and will be made by Serum Institute of India. Trial of biological E-S Corbevax for children will also start soon at 10 places.
