New Delhi: Punjab has started giving final shape to its preparations for the assembly elections. In this sequence, on Monday, the President of the National Congress of the All India Congress, Sonia Gandhi, has formed a committee for the upcoming elections. Congress has made Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu as the chairman of the committee, while Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been made a member of the committee.
According to the committee list released by Congress,
It is to be known that in the coming February, assembly elections are going to be held in five states. Punjab is also one of these five states. In the 2017 assembly elections, the Congress under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh won a big victory and formed an absolute majority government. On the other hand, Shiromani Akali Dal suffered a major setback and it became the number three party in the state. With this, the Aam Aadmi Party, which was contesting the elections for the first time, performed brilliantly and became the main opposition party.
Congress worried about saving power
In the 2017 elections, the Congress formed the government with an absolute majority by winning 66 seats. At the same time, Captain Amarinder Singh became the Chief Minister of the state. For the last four months, the Congress was looking very strong in Punjab. He had won an unprecedented victory in the municipal and panchayat elections. For the first time in the last 50 years, the Congress had captured the Badlo stronghold Bathinda Municipality. But, now the situation has completely changed. In the fight between Captain Amarinder and Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Congress inside the state has started looking weak.
The Congress has suffered a great loss in this fight between the two leaders. Captain resigning from the post of Chief Minister, leaving Congress and forming his new party Punjab Vikas Congress, has announced to contest the elections in alliance with BJP. On the other hand, Congress has played a big bet by replacing the Captain with Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Minister of the state. On the one hand, where the Congress is trying to maintain its power. At the same time, the opposition parties are constantly trying to weaken him.
